This is a throwback to Fall of 2016! I did an Independent Study with Religion Professor Dr. Belcastro and Music Professor Stan Smith on “Jazz and Spirituality,” focusing on the music of Mary Lou Williams and John Coltrane. At the end of the study I put together this recital below, so hope you can check it out and let me know what you think!
And here is a paragraph from the paper I wrote for the same study:
Mary Lou Williams and John Coltrane were both leaders who influenced generations of musicians, jazz fans, followers of religious traditions, and many people from all walks of life. At first it may seem that there is not much to compare between the two of them, but ultimately their similarities are significant enough to teach us something about our own personal soul searching. That is what Mary Lou and Coltrane were ultimately interested in. In finding the fullness of their voices and being able to express it through their music. They were both musicians who were constantly changing, always ahead, and always concerned about the relationship between their music and their spiritual lives.
And here is the music!
