A bunch of my friends already know about this project, but I just wanted to take the time to further explain about a little project I started! The whole idea began after learning about something called Beyond Beanie. Beyond Beanie is a for-profit company that sells beanies and bracelets made by indigenous people from Bolivia. I’m guessing most of their sales occur in the United States and maybe Europe. For each beanie or bracelet they sell they support people in need in Bolivia by providing meals and things of that sort.
After hearing about that, I thought it would be possible to do something similar but with scarves from Mexico. I was thinking just how nice, soft, and warm my scarf I got in my hometown Queretaro is and that people would be willing to pay for something like it! So I started thinking and asking people if they would be interested and that’s how the project was born!

The issue in Mexico is that there are artisans from my hometown Queretaro who handmake and sell these scarves but seem to be unable to make ends meet, often sleeping in shelters or even in the street. Also, I often see kids selling stuff in the streets and I think some of them might be the children of some of the artisans. I then thought that I could help provide some extra income!

The artisans sell their scarves in Mexico for 300 Mexican pesos which is about $16 USD. I decided to ask for $30 because I think these scarves are worth that and I thought they wouldn’t mind getting the extra money! And don’t worry, I plan to give all that money to the artisans. My hope is that the premium price will at least give them a small help. What would be even better is that if indeed their kids are working and not going to school that perhaps they could send them to school with the extra income.
So far I have about 20 scarves ordered! At this point this is a one-time project for family and friends, but who knows, maybe it can evolve! Maybe I could develop a brand and commercialize these scarves in the US and Germany, always considering that the goal is for the artisans in Mexico to receive what their work is worth and to help them make ends meet. Commercializing them in other countries would of course pose some issues, so I’m not sure that will happen… But we will see!
If you want a scarve (or a few) or would otherwise want to get involved, let me know!
For now, what do you think about this project? How do you think I could improve it? Do you think I’m missing something important or that perhaps this would be in some way counterproductive to other goals? Let me know in the comments!
