More than A Decade of Connection
It all started back in 2012 when I went on a high school trip to the Philippines. That first experience had a profound impact on my life, and I ended up returning to the country four more times over the following years.
During those visits, I worked closely with Kids International Ministries (KIDS) and became deeply involved in their various projects. While I was there I helped with construction, I helped bring food to some of the poorest areas of Manila, including a community literally called “trash mountain” as they lived in the landfill of the city, interacted with children at a school and at an orphanage, and made many connections. I met so many incredible people who have truly become like family to me. Even when I couldn’t make it back every year, I stayed connected and continued to support their efforts and the efforts of another group called Journey for Hope.

Philippines Trip 2014:
In 2014, I returned to the Philippines for the second time, and this trip left a lasting mark on me. Two significant things made this visit different: I had the opportunity to share a little through music, and I experienced “Trash Mountain” firsthand.
As I walked through this challenging environment, I was struck by the resilience and joy of the children there. Despite the difficult circumstances—like being covered in soot from burning wood to sell the resulting charcoal—they radiated happiness. Their smiles, energy, and spirit were a powerful reminder that joy can shine even in the most unlikely places.
The pictures below capture a glimpse of this trip:

Philippines Trip 2015:
In 2015 I went back to the Philippines for the first time by myself. This was my first or second year of college and again, it was different to go back by myself rather than with the school. Here are some more photos of this trip:

Sponsoring Filipino Children
In fact, since my high school days, I’ve been sponsoring a number of children living in the country. I even fundraised at my school in Shenyang, China by selling homemade burritos – the proceeds all went towards supporting these kids and their families! It’s been amazing to watch them grow up over the years, even if I couldn’t be there in person.
Returning with Music in 2025
And now, after a decade, I finally have the chance to go back! In March 2025, I’ll be spending a week working with KIDS again. This time, I’ll be bringing my passion for music and my identity as a music therapist to inspire creativity, connection, and self-expression among the children and families.
Leaving a Lasting Impact
Given the brevity of my visit, my focus will be on leaving behind resources that can continue to make an impact long after I’m gone. That’s why I’m fundraising to purchase musical instruments – drums, ukuleles, shakers, and more – that will stay with KIDS and be used in their ongoing programs.
You can find the fundraiser here.
How You Can Help
If you’d like to support this initiative, I hope you may consider donating or sharing my fundraiser. Your contributions will go directly towards purchasing the instruments.
I’m committed to complete transparency throughout this process. I’ll share proof of receipt for all funds collected, as well as receipts for the instrument purchases. And if for some reason the trip can’t happen, I’ll issue refunds.
Thank you for your support in helping me bring music and love back to the Philippines. It’s been a decade in the making, and I can’t wait to reconnect with the community that has become so dear to my heart.
