What Is Music Therapy? - Live Event

Music therapy is an established health profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. According to the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), it is "the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program."

In simpler terms, music therapy involves working with a trained therapist who uses music intentionally to help clients improve their well-being, develop skills, or process emotions. It is practiced worldwide in hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, and mental health programs.

In this online presentation, I’ll explore:

  • What music therapy is and isn’t.
  • How it is practiced in different settings and with diverse populations.
  • Examples of techniques used by music therapists, including active music-making, listening, and songwriting.
  • Scientific research supporting its effectiveness.

This session is designed for anyone who has heard of music therapy but isn’t quite sure what it actually entails. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, educator, student, or simply curious, this presentation will give you a solid introduction to the field.

What You’ll Gain from This Presentation:

  • Clear, research-based information about music therapy.
  • Insights into how music can be used to support health and development.
  • An understanding of who can benefit from music therapy and where it is practiced.
  • Time for questions and answers to address your specific interests.

The goal of this session is to share knowledge and spark interest in a growing and impactful profession.
